Digital News Report- NASA plans on smashing two spacecraft into the moon on Friday morning in search of water-ice in the impact plume. The mission targets a crater called Cabeus which is said to have hydrogen-rich material, a potential sign of water-ice, hidden in its’ shadow. If there are large quantities of water-ice on the moon, it increases the potential for a permanent base there.
At 7:31am EDT (4:31am PT) NASA will launch a rocket from the LCROSS satellite towards the moon. The satellite itself will smash into the surface four minutes later. The first craft, a 2.2 ton rocket stage, will be traveling a 1.55 miles per second, or more than twice the speed of a bullet. A camera mounted to the craft will send live footage back to earth.
The plume of some will be visible from earth with amateur telescopes. For those who don’t have telescopes, the event will be broadcast on NASA TV.
