Digital News Report – Microsoft announced the release of their Xbox LIVE Game Room at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show (2010 CES). Their virtual arcade includes 30 classic arcade games including “Asteroids Deluxe” and “Centipede”.
These games are old – way before SIMS. Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices Division, says “There’s a generation of people who grew up with a set of games like Centipede that are favorites.”
Bach says Microsoft will make the Game Room download available for free to Xbox LIVE or PC. Once you download and install the software you can wonder around a virtual old-style arcade.
The game cabinets in the arcade will include games from Atari, Intellivision, Konami and others. Each week the company will release new game titles. You can play the demo for free, but if you want to continue the game you need to purchase “virtual quarters” to continue.
“There’s huge nostalgic appeal to these games,” says Kristen Miyake, an Xbox marketing manager.
