Digital News Report – Although the percent of obesity Americans is still high, the rate of increase has leveled-off. The publisher of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) thought the results of this study were so important that they published them online early.
The percentage of obese Americans has climbed over the past few decades. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) showed an eight percent increase in obese Americans from 1976-1980 through 1988-1994. Compare this to a level obesity rate from 1960 through 1980.
In a study conducted in 2007-2008 the overall obesity rate was 33.8 percent. “Enhanced efforts to provide environmental interventions may lead to improved health and to future decreases in the prevalence of obesity,” the authors wrote.

It’s funny how this research concluded that obesity is slowing down, when another recent study (using the same NHANES data) concluded that while “overweight” is plateauing, “obese” shows no sign of slowing down
