Digital News Report – Gaines Adams, the defensive end for the Chicago Bears, died Sunday from cardiac arrest. Unlike a heart attack, a cardiac arrest occurs when the heart goes into a serious arrhythmia or stops beating.
Adams, who was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the first round in the 2007 NFL Draft, was traded to the Chicago Bears just last year.
The Greenwood (S.C.) County deputy coroner Marcia Kelley-Clark said Adams had an enlarged heart which likely led to his cardiac arrest, the Chicago Sun Times reported. Adams was living in Greenwood. Toxicology reports will take a couple weeks.
Adams was taken to the emergency room in South Carolina after his girlfriend found him at home. He was pronounced dead at 8:21 am Sunday (7:21 Chicago time).
Chansi Stuckey, Cleveland Browns wide receiver and close friend who played at Clemson with Adams said: ”I thought it was one of those fake rumors that go around that you find out is a lie. ‘This time, it turned out to be a tragedy. I just hope people remember him as the great guy he was.”
Adam’s was just 26 years old.
