Digital News Report – There is a public service announcement that Bristol Palin filmed as spokesperson for Candie’s Foundation for anti-teen pregnancy. Bristol is former Alaska Governors Sarah Palin’s daughter who had a teen pregnancy while her mother was campaigning to become Vice-President of the United States.
Bristol didn’t go on to marry the father of their baby Tripp. Instead the couple has court dates set up for her to receive child support payments from the father. The commercial does not reflect the despair of a broken family that can happen too often with teen parents, whether or not they are rich or poor.
Bristol Palin, 19, public service announcement came off with a bit snobbish and might not convey the message that she says during interviews that being a teen mom is difficult. The ad shows her as being OK raising the baby because she comes from a well-to-do family that allows her this privilege to have a child out of wedlock because she has the resources and family to support her child raising. The message was a half-way message against teen pregnancy that came across as saying if you don’t have money or a built in baby sister don’t get pregnant.
In the commercial she asks “What if I didn’t come from a famous family? What if I didn’t have all their support? What if I didn’t have all these opportunities? Believe me, it wouldn’t be pretty.” They show her wonderful life with her child, then they show an empty room with not much in it but a sofa, herself and a baby. Then she closes with “Pause before you play.”
Bristol Palin was on ABC’s ‘Good Morning America.’ Tripp is 15 months old now and during this interview she wants to let teens know how difficult it is to be a teen parent. She said that every day she is 100 percent responsible for her child. The PSA is too encourage teens not to have a baby at this age said the rep from Candie’s Foundation. They say “Pause before you play” as a catch phrase. Palin said that pause catch phrase could have several meanings such as pause and go get a condom, pause and think about your life, pause and wait until marriage. Palin said that it is extremely difficult to raise her baby on her own.
The Candie’s Foundation rep said that the message should be that teens in general should wait to have a baby until later in life. The PSA will be running in the month of May to go along with National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month. Maybe the organization will reconsider changing the message to how difficult it is to raise a child at that young of age, rich or poor.
Bristol Palin to Teens: ‘Pregnancy Can Wait’ YouTube Video report by AP
Hey Bristol, Yeah!!! You are an inspiration. Don’t change ANYTHING. Don’t let anybody pressure you to do anything that YOU don’t want. You are very cool!!
Wow Bristol and Candies Foundation,
Powerful and right to the point. Thank you.
so if I have a lot of money I can get pregnant? ok cool.
Honestly, people need to grow up and just recognize an amazing act of courage. People can go on and rant about this ad, but they are just ignorant. I don’t see any other teen celebrities coming on here saying that having a baby is hard. She is honest. Knowing many pregnant teens, it is hard, their lives change, and MARIA: how about you actually watch the commerical? It is saying that it is difficult if you don’t have the resources, not impossible. She emphasized that she did not plan this, but it can be done. Many young girls think having children is glamourous because of stories like Brittney Spear’s younger sister, have you seen 16 & pregnant? Sometime a father needs to step out from the shadows and discuss the other side.
Whoa, why is she a spokesperson for this subject? Is the message, my mom’s rich and getting richer so I don’t have to “pause before I play but you do”? Great going, Bristol. Keep on playing, girl.
