(Sacramento, CA) – Senate Bill 835, authored by Senator Tony Strickland (R-Thousand Oaks) was heard in the Senate Governmental Organization Committee today. The bill, which is aimed at saving California money by downsizing or eliminating obsolete state agencies, passed by a vote of 7-1.
SB 835 would create the Bureaucracy Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC). This commission, made up of a non-partisan panel of analysts, would be charged with identifying, downsizing, or eliminating obsolete or duplicate state bureaucracies.
Senator Strickland said, “California is in one of the worst economic climates in history. With a budget shortfall expected to be almost $20 billion, we need to find ways to trim the fat. My bill, modeled after the very successful federal BRAC program, will do just that.”
“California is in need of reform and I believe SB 835 is a solid first step in achieving that reform,” Senator Strickland added.
SB 835 now heads to the Senate Rules Committee.
