Digital News Report – Florida is one of 37 states that holds an election for a new governor this fall. The campaign has been focusing on the Republican Primary battle between GOP regular Bill McCollum and a corporate executive upstart, Rick Scott.
So far voters have been treated to little more than broadcast character assassinations between McCollum and Scott wherein each accuse the other of being two faced, corrupt, and unfit to serve, while they laud themselves as compassionate, caring and conservative. Each promises to reduce the size of government and reign in spending. Neither has exactly explained how.
Is it unreasonable to suggest that, as representatives of the party out of power, they could energize the indignation of the voting public toward the all too apparent incompetence of the federal government by detailing constitutional and institutional plans to contain federal sprawl? Could they use all the money they have spent to slur each other and base their conservative credentials on nothing more than wishes and rhetoric to explain how they would take to turn back the federal leviathan that is trying to control every aspect of our lives? Obviously, based upon their plans to this point, they are banking that voters indignation can be contained within choosing between the existing two parties as the future of the country remains on a political see-saw and the fortunes of politicians are as secure as a 50-50 chance for elections.
Meanwhile, the outline of how states can face up to federal usurpation is effectively detailed by Thomas Woods in his book, Nullification. Wood’s work is being read and considered by an ever growing number of voters who are thoroughly disgusted by the choices the two parties offer election after election. He does an excellent job investigating the history of the nature of the union of independent states that formed the federal government in Washington, D.C., and how the states sought to limit the federal government’s power with a written constitution. All the while he demonstrates the options that have been available to the states to defy federal actions and laws that violate those constitutional boundaries and how the federal government has been usurping power of the states through various political games to assuage people into believing that the constitution is a living document with language that mystically changes with the demands of the times.
Among the political games that the political system and the government plays with the American public is ignoring the true documented history of how this country came to be, the meaning of the laws that define it, and how certain decisions of some highly regarded people have had disastrous consequences for all of us. Woods exposes these extremely well while focusing on how state legislatures and governors can stand up to the oppression the federal government is placing upon us, but Thomas J. DiLorenzo uses his entire book, The Real Lincoln, to expose the historical roots of how the venerated 15th president with his War Against Southern Secession gave birth to the incompetent central government of the 21st century that ignores any and every legal principal that was designed to contain its power.
Much of Woods’ and DiLorenzo’s books overlap, especially with investigations of the voluntary nature of the union and how politicians gloss over the the limits of constitutional language on their powers. None of their work, however, is redundant as Woods investigates the points as a method of informing his reader that state governments have real influence on containing Washington, but DiLorenzo uses his review to dismantle the myth that Abraham Lincoln fought a war to free people and make the country whole.
Both of these books document every point they raise regarding how modern Americans have been deceived regarding the nature of the union of states and the laws that are to regulate the government of those states. Neither comes close to being paranoid, alarmist, or polemic rants. Neither do they entertain an idea that conspiratorial forces are guiding our ignorance to some grand objective.
What Woods and DiLorenzo do is show us that there is truth to what we were, how we have left that truth, but returning to that truth can set us free. That of course would cause great damage to the two party political system that has profited mightily from the illegitimate central power that has morphed from the federal government created by the several United States, which is probably why you do not hear Republican or Democrat candidates discussing how the offices for which they are contending can be used to restore limits and order to elected offices and freedom to our lives.
They obviously believe it is better to assassinate each other’s character and cajole us into believing that their election will turn back the problems of government just because they are self-professed good people.
