Digital News Report – More people are expected to be able to lose weight using lap-band surgery because of a recent U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory committee recommendation.
The Gastroenterology and Urology Devices Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee reported that a study is recommended that the threashold for use of the procedure be lower to patients with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30.
During the lap-band procedure a surgeon places a laparoscopic adjustable gastric band around the stomach. This effectively shrinks the size of the stomach.
Allergan is a beneficiary of the announcement. “We are pleased with the Committee’s decision, which reflects consensus that there is a need for additional, effective treatment options for patients who are currently obese, given the known significant health ramifications of obesity”, the company said in a statement.
