Digital News Report – Today televisions are bigger and better, but which ones are best? Does size matter or is the type of the display panel more important?
Many consumers are looking for a quality low cost TV to watch the superbowl, Netflix movies and other entertainment on. This year there is a large selection to choose from. Remember, if you are looking at a 32 inch model, the measurement is diagonal from corner to corner. That is the standard method of measuring the size of the screen (display).
There are several types of displays, including LED backlit LCD, LCD, and plasma. Within these groups there are several subgroups and manufacturers. Pure LED displays are typically used outdoors and aren’t designed for indoor use.
All of the TVs listed in this article are High Definition (HD).
For as little as $169, Wal-Mart has a The Viore 22″ 1080p LED-LCD HDTV. The LCD includes a LED backlight and full HD capabilities. LED backlit LCDs allow for a slimmer design and lower power consumption compared to other backlit models. The contrast ratio is 10,000:1.
Best Buy has a LG 37″ LCD HDTV. It is on sale right now for $549.99. The display has a contrast ratio of 100,000:1.
Sears has a wide selection of televisions on sale before the Super Bowl. The Panasonic VIERA® TC-P42S2 42-inch is onsale for $599.88. This is a low-energy consumption model that is Energy Star approved.
K-Mart also has a wide selection of televisions. The company says that one of their best sellers is the Sylvania LC320SLX 32-inch LCD TV for $349. This is also an energy star model.
Finally, Target has had some great prices on TVs, especially around the holidays. Target is promoting their Philips 40″ Class 1080p 120Hz LED LCD HDTV. The list price is $849.99. This week they are offering it for $599.00.
If size really matters, Wal-Mart has the VIZIO 65″ Class Theater 3D” Edge Lit Razor LED” LCD HDTV for $3,499. The set includes a Bluetooth remote control, Hulu Plus, Amazon Downloads on Demand and Netflix Instant. The services will cost extra, if you don’t already have them. Amazingly, this set has a 1 million to 1 Dynamic Contrast Ratio.
“Theater 3D means you see crystal-clear, flicker-free 3D that’s up to 2 times brighter than conventional 3D,” they say.
Some televisions are available online. Buyers can save on shipping when they have the product shipped from site to store. The company will ship the TV from their warehouse to the retail outlet for customers to pick up.
