Digital News Report – Apple launched a new subscription service for magazines, newspapers, videos, and music. Publishers on the Apple App Store can choose to offer their content on a subscription basis. This new subscription service recently followed the launch of News Corp. digital newspaper called “The Daily.”
Apple gets a 30 percent cut out of the subscription price only if they get the subscriber signing up for the app subscription service. If the publisher brings the new subscriber or existing subscriber, they get 100 percent and Apple doesn’t get any cut. There is one condition however, the publisher cannot offer a lower price outside of the App Store.
Publishers of newspapers can offer their print subscribers access to a free digital edition or they can also sell a digital only edition. Apple said that the app however cannot include links inside their apps to purchase content or another subscription outside of this app.
