Digital News Report – The University of California Santa Cruz (UCSC) has received a $50,000 grant to support genome analysis.
According to university representative Tim Stephens, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has awarded a Sloan Research Fellowship to Richard E. (Ed) Green for his pioneering research on ancient DNA. His technology was used for advanced sequencing technology to study ancient DNA extracted from fossil bones.
Green analyzed the bones of the Neanderthal and Denisovans. Green, an assistant professor at the University, published papers on the subject in 2010.
Besides an interest in Neanderthals and Denisovans, Green has studied human evolutionary genetics and the regulation of gene expression.
The Sloan Research Fellowships are given to early-career scientists and scholars in recognition of achievement and the potential to contribute substantially to their fields.
