Digital News Report – Richard Branson is partnering with Google to explore and chronicle the ocean depths (see video below). The Virgin founder is launching Virgin Oceanic to make five dives to the deepest unexplored point on the planet; the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean with a depth of 11,034 meters.
“We may well set a few Guinness World Records while we’re at it”, Branson says in his blog. There may be as many as 30 world’s records broken.
He will dive solo into the bottom of the five deepest trenches in the world.
Each of the dives will take the explorer more than 10 kilometers down. It has been reported that Branson will be working with explorer Chris Welch.
Google will help by supplying the mapping technology. The company will likely share the discoveries online, record the event and help catalog the new species discovered.
