Digital News Report – Two earthquakes struck southern Spain on Wednesday killing eight people and injuring over 160.
The first earthquake struck at 5:13 p.m. local time (5:12 a.m. PDT) and measured 4.5. The second quake, which was considered to be “moderate”, struck at 6:47 p.m. local time (9:47 a.m. PDT) and measured 5.1.
There were reports of damage and a tunnel near road A7 collapsed. There were buildings damaged in Murcia and Lorca near the Mediterranean coast, and the earthquake could be felt as far away as Cordoba, Madrid and Valencia.
The depth of the earthquake was only 1 kilometer, or about 0.6 miles. That is relatively shallow.
In Rome, Italy, residents took to the streets out of fear of an earthquake. The seismologist Raffaele Bendandi, who died in 1979, predicted an earthquake would strike the city on May 11, 2011. Romans left their home and did not go to work out of fear.
Another earthquake rattled the Greek island of Dodecanese. That tumbler measured 5.1 and there were no reports of injury or damage.
