SUNNYVALE Calif. (DNR) – The city of Sunnyvale ranked number one in a list of innovative cities compiled by The Daily Beast.
The rankings were based on the number of patent applications per 100,000 residents. In 2010 there were 1,949 applications for patents in the city of 140,081 individuals. There were 3,255 patents awarded to companies and individuals in the city of Sunnyvale.
Silicon Valley and California in general did well in the survey. Fremont California, with a population of 214,089, ranked number two with 1,469 patents. Tesla Motors is located in Fremont.
The Daily Beast only evaluated the top 200 U.S. cities. San Jose, with a population of 945,942, ranked number three. The city residents and corporations applied for 3,791 patents and were awarded 6,086 patents.
Other cities in the top 10 include Irvine, Cary N.C., San Francisco, Seattle Washington, Boise Idaho, Pasadena, and Plano Texas.
John Pilger with the city of Sunnyvale says the data was collected from the U.S. Patent Office and the latest Census.
