As we age our bone density can be affected. Doctor Susan Brown, the Director of the Center for Better Bones, says that an alkaline diet may benefit us.
Brown says her Better Bones program can help fight bone loss, even hereditary osteoporosis. If bones experience bone weakness due to genetics, switching to a low acidic diet is beneficial.
“When we talk about bone,” she said, “we are talking about a few different things. One is bone mineral density, and that is today how we define osteoporosis, although I don’t think it is the best definition of osteoporosis.”
In her presentation “Hereditary Osteoporosis and the Better Bones Program”, can run in families. The machines don’t measure density, but measures the size of the bone. This may predispose a person to fracture.
Her alkaline diet approach eliminates some meat and vegetables. The goal is to consume more alkaline foods and fewer acidic foods, according to pH. The lower the pH, the more acidic a food is.
Typically, meat, poultry, fish, dairy, eggs, nuts, legumes, grains, and alcohol are more acidic than fruits and vegetables. The good news is that coffee, red wine and white wine, lemon and lime juices are on the low acidic food list.
