INDIANAPOLIS – The final day of the 2024 NFL Combine showcased the impressive athleticism of heavyweight offensive linemen and others. Despite a few surprises, the event didn’t fall short of exceptional hard-hitting workouts and exceptional performances.
The offensive tackle class shone brightly, led by Alabama’s right tackle stalwart J.C. Latham and others, with promising displays of prowess on the field. One of the afternoon’s leading testers was Notre Dame’s Joe Alt, weighing 321 pounds and standing nearly 6-9. Alt’s impressive 40-yard dash of 5.05 and his 9-foot-4 broad jump were significant achievements given his substantial size.
Unfortunately, Georgia’s offensive lineman Amarius Mims suffered an injury during his second attempt at the 40-yard dash. Before his misfortune, Mims demonstrated incredible feats, clocking a 5.07 in the 40-yard dash and a broad jump of 9-3 while measuring nearly 6-8 and 340 pounds.
Other impressive performances included Xavier Worthy, a Texas wide receiver who broke a standing record with a 40-yard dash of 4.21 seconds. Adonai Mitchell, another Texas athlete, also delivered a standout performance.
Running backs, however, did not significantly impact the draft following mediocre performances on Saturday.
According to Charles McDonald, an NFL writer, several other athletes emerged as winners and losers in this year’s scouting combine. Braden Fiske, a 24-year-old former Western Michigan star, caught the eye of scouts as he racked up a quickly run 40-yard dash of 4.78 and a 9-feet, 9-inch broad jump. These exceptional performances could prove to boost Fiske’s draft stock.
A shift was seen in the participation of top prospects that could potentially decrease the relevance of the combine. Some big names opted out of drills, which might spur the NFL to reconsider the combine’s organization or anxiety-inducing elements in the future.
