Apple’s new M4 chip-powered iPad Pro is allegedly demonstrating solid progress according to recent Geekbench scores. Information leaked shows the latest technological powerhouse proving its chops with significant advancements in machine learning.
Yesterday, the tech giant launched the latest instalment of its bespoke silicon, the M4, in its new iPad Pros. The firm states that the new CPU ranks as 50% faster than the preceding M2 in the 6th-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Significantly, the M4 sports ten cores, an augmentation of two more than the M2’s eight. Despite this, such assertions remain unverified.
Furthermore, the M4, with its Neural Engine, was tested on Geekbench, indicating incremental progression in machine learning performances. Initial results indicate the M4, boasting 10-core ARM processor and 16GB RAM, attaining a Geekbench score of 9234. This represents a gain of approximately 22.9% over the M2 score. An even more modest gain was observed when compared to the M3 14-inch MacBook Pro, with an improvement of 10.4%.
Interestingly, the M4 appears to focus intensely on AI processing. With a 16-core neural engine, it supports an astounding 38 trillion operations per second. A comparison with M3, which also housed a 16-core neural engine, denotes a 5% improvement for the M4.
During the presentation on May 7, the company primarily concentrated on hardware, including unveiling the new iPad Air, iPad Pro, and the Apple Pencil Pro. However, it only hinted at the AI capabilities of the M4, primarily in conjunction with Final Cut Pro for iPad 2 and Logic Pro for iPad 2.
Apple continues to lead mobile computing, leaving Windows laptops trailing in efficiency terms. Encroaching competitors like Qualcomm, with launch of the Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus chips, are however closing the gap. With golden age of powerful yet highly efficient laptops on the horizon, Apple needs to up its game to stay ahead.
