Digital News Report – Doctor Oz discussed how magnets might help to treat chronic pain. The moving magnets or energy waves is believed to help treat pain and promote healing. Dr. Oz explained that our body has energy and the magnetic energy changes how our body deals with pain. The FDA has approved magnetic therapy for some uses. What is discussed on today’s ‘The Dr. Oz Show’ is pulsing moving magnets and not static magnets like you stick on the refrigerator.
The first guest, James Dillard, MD, prescribes his patients with magnetic therapy for treating pain. Dr. Dillard explained that nerve cells are electrical cells and adding the magnetic fields can affect how the nerves fire and quite them down. Additionally, the magnet therapy could also increase circulation in the injured area and promote healing. Dr. Dillard said that many of his pain patients are sick of the prescription pills and injections and are willing to try something else.
Dr. Oz showed an animation of how magnetic therapy might be able to work throughout the whole body. It might change the way red blood cells are arranged and could help with deep healing and better oxygen supplied to the injured body part.
The first product shown for magnetic therapy was a pulsing magnetic mat that helped for back pain. This creates a pulsed magnetic field while the person lies on top of it.
Dr. Oz said that there might be risks for cancer using this mats. Dr. Dillard said that orthopedic surgeons have been using magnetic therapy to help heal fractures over the last twenty years. He added that people with acute pain could respond to the magnetic mat therapy within 2 -3 weeks usually.

Dr. Oz had a police officer come of the show to share about his success with using the magnetic mat therapy for treating his severe back pain. The police officer said that he tried a number of options to try to treat the back pain. After being desperate for a solution for his back pain, he decided to try the magnetic mat. He said he was in less pain within one treatment. In 6-8 weeks, his back pain was gone. He is completely pain free today he said.
Dr. Oz said that patients should tell their doctors about how these magnetic treatments work for them. That way it could benefit others because doctors may be able to help others suffering from pain.
The police officer said that the magnetic therapy mat cost him around $2,000. Dr. Oz said these mats are available to rent one for around $35 a week.

Dr. Dillard hopes that this TV show would be help inform people with a better pain management solution. Dr. Dillard said pregnant women and people with heart pacemakers should not use the magnetic mats.
The next guest on the TV show was William Powluk, MD who also uses and prescribes patients with magnetic therapy to treat pain. He said that if the magnet products were FDA approved, it would work for what it is approved for. However, many magnet therapy devices are over-the-counter and might not have an FDA approval. Sometimes websites have evidence that they work, and sometimes more searching online is necessary to see what others are saying about the product.
The next magnetic therapy product shown was by OrthoCor and was used to treat knee pain. The OrthoCor knee magnet device is a FDA approved for treating knee pain, which also includes arthritis pain. The price is around $450 and it is not typically covered by insurance.
Alternatively, a similar product called Actipatch is not FDA approved but is inexpensive costing around $29.95. It is comfortable and is not expensive. Dr. Powluk said that the Actipatch will work but it will take longer to get benefit because it is lower intensity compared to the OrhtoCor product.
Static magnets are much more difficult to assess, and unless a doctor helps instruct how to use them, Dr. Oz said they probably are not going to be helpful, and he is not recommending these products. He suggests talking to a doctor about using magnetic therapy for pain.
