Digital News Report- Despite an early leak online and dismal reviews, X-Men Origins: Wolverine still managed to dominate the box office and bring in more than $87 million over the weekend. This marks the largest opening of the year so far and the second biggest opening of the four movies in the X-Men franchise. Though the film still has a 36% rating on RottenTomatoes.com, it’s clear that fans of the franchise really don’t care what others have to say about their beloved mutants.
The film has its fair share of flaws, but ultimately it’s a piece of special effects eye candy and X-Men fan fodder. If you are expecting riveting dialogue, top-notch acting, and a well-crafted story, this is clearly the wrong movie for you. The early leak of the film didn’t have completed special effects, which makes me wonder just how those who got their hands on the leak managed to sit through the entire film. The special effects are truly the main reason to see it and without them it’s not worth it.
The true X-Men enthusiast will also find enjoyment in the large cast of fan favorites such as Deadpool and, my personal favorite, Gambit. Yes, there is a young, attractive Remy LeBeau complete with that wonderful southern drawl that makes certain girls squeal with delight. Unfortunately he didn’t really fit in the film, but with all of the flaws, I’ll take any high point I can get. Deadpool’s final action sequence was quite amazing as well.
Chances are that if you wanted to shut your brain off and watch a mindless action flick you’ve probably already seen the movie. There really aren’t many others out in theatres right now. But if you are scouring the Internet for reviews on the next great film, look elsewhere. This might be worth the price of a matinee ticket if you’ve already seen everything else playing at your local cinema. If not, it’s not worth your time or money.
