Digital News Report- The 66th Annual Golden Globes list of nominations has been released. The ceremony will be telecast to more than 150 countries.
The Best Supporting Actor category includes the late Heath Ledger, who passed away last January of an Ambien overdose at the age of 28. He is up against Tom Cruise and Robert Downy Jr. for Tropic Thunder, Ralph Fiennes for The Duchess, and Philip Seymour Hoffman for Doubt.
Sean Penn has been nominated for Best Actor in a Drama for his portrayal of the influential San Francisco Harvey Milk in Gus Van Sant’s Milk. The film received no other nominations.
The five films in the Best Motion Picture category are Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, The Reader, Revolutionary Road, and Slumdog Millionaire.
Meanwhile, the Best Television Series-Drama category includes House M.D., Dexter, Mad Men, and the two newcomers to the scene, In Treatment and True Blood. Comedies include 30 Rock, Weeds, Californication, Entourage, and The Office.
Mary Louise-Parker has been once again nominated for her role as the drug-dealing mom, Nancy Botwin, in Weeds. She won the Best Actress- Comedy Golden Globe for the same role in 2006. She is up against Christina Applegate for Samantha Who?, America Fererra for Ugly Betty, Tina Faye for 30 Rock, and Debra Messing for The Starter Wife.
Anna Paquin has also been nominated for Best Actress- Drama for her role as the telepathic barmaid, Sookie Stackhouse, in True Blood. Paquin has previously won an Academy Award for her role in The Piano. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for the same role in 1994, but this will be her first time being nominated in the television category.
