Digital News Report – The January 15, 2010 eclipse was viewed by millions of people from China to Africa (see video below). This was the longest annular solar eclipse of the millennium with a magnitude of 0.9190, according to NASA scientists.
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon travels in between the sun and the earth. The sun is temporarily blocked from view and the sky darkens. An annulus, or ring, is formed around the moon by the sun’s rays.
The maximum duration of the annularity was 11 minutes and 8 seconds. The eclipse started in Chad Africa and traveled over the Indian Ocean where it reached its maximum block and then moved over India and China where it ended.
This was the longest annulus eclipse until December 23, 3043.
