Digital News Report – Rain is expected through the weekend in Vancouver British Columbia Canada where the Winter Olympic Games will be kick-off. The rain could possibly turn the winter games into a soggy mess, but the mountain areas may receive 4 inches of new snow.

The Olympic flame reached city hall Thursday night after traveling around the country visiting 1,000 communities. With 12,000 torch bearers, the flame traveled 28,000 miles to Vancouver where it will be used to light the Olympic cauldron on Friday night. It has not been revealed who will light the cauldron, but Canadians are hoping for hockey legend Wayne Gretzky.

There may even be two lighting ceremonies: One on the Vancouver waterfront and the other inside the stadium.

Opening Ceremony:

The ceremonies will begin on Friday, February 12, 2010 at 6:00 pm PST. The ceremony will cost an amazing $40 million, paid for in part by the Canadian federal government. It will be the most expensive Winter Olympics opening ceremony ever and second most expensive in all Olympic history. The Beijing 2008 Olympics ceremony was more expensive.

It will also be the first time an Olympic ceremony is held indoors at the BC Place Stadium in Vancouver. That is North and South America’s largest “air supported” dome. That is good news because weather forecasters are predicting rain.

The events for the opening ceremony have not been disclosed, but insiders say audience members can expect a light show, dancers, skaters and ice carved totem poles.

Broadcast For the Olympics:

NBC will be broadcasting the Olympics in the United States. It will be seen on Universal Sports. On Cable and Satellite TV you can also catch the games on the USA Network, CNBC, and MSNBC or listen to them on Westwood One Radio.

The music video “We Are The World: 25 For Haiti” will make its debut during the opening ceremony.
