Digital News Report – New York congressperson Louise Slaughter made some statements today during the Health Care Summit that garnered national attention. The congresswoman described the plight of one of her constituents who had lost her teeth.
“She wore her dead sister’s teeth which of course were uncomfortable and did not fit,” Slaughter said. “Do you believe that in America that’s where we would be?”
The 80-year old congresswoman said she heard the story from Lavonne Ansari of the Community Health Center of Buffalo.
She also told the forum that eight states in this country right now “have declared that domestic violence is a preexisting condition”. She said that women may pay 48 percent more for health insurance. “48 percent is the higher cost for women in many cases to buy their own insurance. Believe you me, that is really discriminatory.”
Slaughter made another amazing point. “In 1991, women were not included in any of the trials at the NIH because we had hormones,” she said. “Up to that point, 1991, all research at the Institutes of Health was done on white males.”
