Digital News Report – Toyota engineers have evaluated the evidence that Professor David Gilbert of Southern Illinois University provided concerning a possible electronic cause of the car companies acceleration problem. They concluded that the conditions involved in the test were “virtually impossible” in real life.
Gilbert gave a demonstration of his findings to ABC News Brian Ross on February 22nd and the next day gave testimony before a congressional committee. Toyota hired the engineering consulting firm, Exponent, to evaluate the claims.
Toyota has stated before that they had not found any electronic problem that could cause the sudden acceleration. Today they said that Gilbert “rewired and reengineered” the electronics “in a specific sequence, and under conditions that are virtually impossible to occur in real-world conditions without visible evidence.”
The company also said that Gilbert manipulated the electronics to “mimic” a valid full throttle condition.
