Digital News Report – The Toyota vehicle acceleration problems and braking problems has prompted General Motors to plan an additional brake override system that would prevent any potential problems like that in the Toyota cars.
The override would enact when a driver steps on alternately pushes both the brake and the acceleration pedals at the same time. The engine would cut the speed the car is going. GM is planning it as a software upgrade for cars that have an electronic throttle control system on new cars. It is already available for sports cars such as Corvette or Chevrolet.
The brake override would become standard in the 2012 model cars that General Motors manufacturers. It is similar to what Toyota is doing to the vehicles to fix the acceleration problems.
The Transportation agency is thinking about possibly making the brake override mandatory in all new cars.
