Digital News Report – Spirit Airlines is going to begin charging for carry on baggage fees beginning on flights that occur on and after August 1st, 2010. They will allow one backpack sized carry on that will fit underneath your seat for free, but anything that doesn’t could be charged up anywhere from $20 up to $45 depending on discounts and when you pay the fee.
The bags that fit in the overhead compartment will be charged a $20 fee if you have their $9 Fare Club membership. This will allow you to purchase the fee at a discount. If you don’t have the membership and you pay the fee when you are checking-in either by phone or at check-in you will be paying $30 for this check on bag. If you haven’t checked in the bag and paid the fee you would face a $45 fee for the carry-on overhead baggage fee.
The good news is that if you do travel fairly often joining Spirit Airlines $9 Fare Club could save you some money. They have 1 cent airfares plus the cost of gas, taxes and fees. This can be rather inexpensive. For instance Spirit Airlines says that a one way ticket from Detroit to Las Vegas would cost a $9 Fare Club member $72.93 which includes the fuel, taxes and fees. It does not include the luggage fees.
Carry on baggage fees now have a discount for their $9 Fare Club members. They save $10 per bag checked off the regular cost of those that have checked it at the check-in or by phone.
Spirit has a website at www.spiritair.com/howmuchismyfuel to help make it easier for customers to know how much the ticket fare will cost them.
Hey Spirit Airlines:
Now I have 45 more reasons NOT to fly on your airline! Just think, the weight savings of 40% less passengers should allow you to put on more bags for the schmucks that are still dumb enough to book your flights. Keep it up! Soon you’ll be a ghost.
