Digital News Report – On June 12th a pilot union strike with Spirit Airlines caused all of their flights to be canceled through Wednesday, June 16th, 2010. The airlines is giving customers that have had unflown flights future flight credits and an additional $100 in future flight credits.
Customers that want a full refund instead of a flight credit are asked to call Spirit Airlines toll-free at 1-800-772-7117. If you have made reservations before May 11th and had also purchased travel insurance you are asked to call Travel Guard at 1 (866) 877-3191 and file an insurance claim. Those with travel insurance may have Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption benefits in their travel insurance plan that can be valuable.
The pilot union strike with Spirit Airlines started because the ALPA declined the offer of a compounded average of 29 percent pay increase which would be an additional $70 million spent over the next five years from the airlines. The airlines said that this pay increase combined with annual step increases would total a 47 percent increase in compensation for the pilots over the five year period.
