Digital News Report – Unemployment benefits have become a political hot-potato and many Senators who supported the last extension of benefits said that would be the last extension. On Friday H.R. 4213 failed to receive the support of 60 senators to move forward.
“I am saddened that people in Hawaii, many of whom have lost their jobs through no fault of their own, must continue to make do without this vital assistance,” said Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D-Hawaii).
Just last week economists began revising their assumption that the economy is in recovery. Some believe we could be headed for a double-dip. Manufacturing around the world has slowed but the overall output has expanded. The growth has slowed more than expected.
Pending new home sales fell 30 percent in May. This was expected after the federal tax credit expired. The National Association of Realtors reports that pending home sales plunged 30 percent in May after rising 23% between January and April.
Jobs are hard to find, according to several reports around the country. Unemployment has been near double digits and there is not quick fix. The stimulus package is winding down and Democrats are calling for a new jobs bill.
The Labor Department reports that there were just 83,000 private-sector jobs created last month. Even the broadband Internet project inspired by the stimulus bill only created 5,000 jobs.
“Because of our current economic problems, many families need these unemployment benefits to simply meet their basic household needs while they continue to search for work,” Akaka said. “I expect the Senate to continue working to pass an extension soon.”
The Senate is expected to pick up the bill again after the 4th of July recess.

The people who gotten lay off in 2008 has not gotten a single job and here comes the second recession. Those 99ers are right. The unemployed are more like 20%. WHere do they get 9.5% unemployment? I bet it is the government economist again that is manipulating the numbers. By November the government will published an unemployment that is more like what they want to hear 5.5% anyone? It is a joke. I have never seen this bad for the last 30-40 yrs. I don’t believe we will be out of recession. It could turn into a depression.
The Senate is an abject disgrace. We give Israel $10 Million a day, a foriegn country, yet our own “elected public figures” refused to come to the aid of the American people, SHAME ON THEM !
The House passed a new standalone bill Thursday, yet the Senate went on it’s merry vacaction without a thought for the millions of unemployed American people who will lose their UI benefit. We are screaming toward a double dip economic downturn, yet no doubt the Republican’s will try to block this new bill when they return from stuffing their faces.
Never in the history of America have so few failed to understand the basic needs of the
I am tired of getting more and more stressed as I face the fact that my state unemployment benefits will run out next week and I will probably never get the extension I so need. NO Tier 1,2,3, or 4!!!! Did I get laid off, through no fault of my own, too late? Since economists forecasted and predicted the future lay offs and closing of businesses when the market first down turned, I feel a bill should have been passed that stipulated each newly unemployed person would be eligible to receive up to 99 weeks of extended unemployment. And I know even that is not enough given the dismal job market, but it would make the extensions more equitable for each and every unemployed person during this terrible REPRESSION. Yeah I know what they say it, but I think its more like a depression, thus I just combined the two. Good luck fellow unemployed Americans!
These scumbag Senators will jump at the chance to immediately approve more billions for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the financial relief of Greece and Haiti but not one red cent for Americans in financial distress. The Congress has turned on us! Foreigners are more valuable than the Americans who sacrificed through the years to finance this country. Someone suggested claiming ten times more dependents on the W-4 form (the withholding form at the workplace. At tax filing time you can then pay what you owe. In the meantime the Senate won’t get their paychecks since no one will be having any money withheld from their pay. What do you think that the Senators would do about that? NOTHING! That’s what they would do! They would begin to feel the pinch that the unemployed and unfunded are feeling right now!
I am tired of out of touch senators and other elected officials not understanding the mess this country is in, and the role have played in getting us here. Americans can no longer sit by and allow our future to be decided by people who do not have a clue about what this country needs. We need to be heard and change must come sooner rather than later. Not one republican voted to pass the unemployment extension NOT ONE. They would rather further their own agenda than to do the right thing. It makes me sick.I think we need to start holding them accountable and demand results. Someone needs to start looking out for Americans and we have the wrong folks in office to do that. We must speak up now and be sure we are heard. Its time for change.
I’m a little confused. The president has the right to call the congress back from vacation. It’s in the constitution. Why hasn’t he done it? FDR and Truman did it for exactly the same reasons as we face today. Economic disaster and a do nothing congress.
If you had 2 million people on a boat that was sinking, would you sit back and see how many drown? Or would you help them? Would you think they can wait? Or would you get them help right away?
And if you told your kid, no, you can’t buy your car with your college fund it’s earmarked for your future, and he kept on insisting on trying to use his college fund rather than find funding elsewhere, would you call him brilliant or a moron?
Because that’s what’s happening here. The Democrats and Republicans are sitting back waiting for the 2 million to drown while they play games about how to pay for the car.
The Republican’s say it’s the Democrats responsibility to pay for the entire bill (Notice there are Republican constituents who are on unemployment as well, but it’s all the Democrats responsibility to find the money, not both sides) or the Dems say, “ok find us the money” and they keep going back to the money earmarked for future jobs. Nobody reaches across the aisle to try for a compromise. This is the epitomy of Truman’s Do Nothing 80th Congress.
I would say the Republicans have a point it if wasn’t for the 30B+ with 80B+ war spending bill they put through without a murmur before they went on vacation and if they hadn’t, for the past 50 years, voted on unemployment extensions as emergency spending…and then renegged in one of the worst economic climates out there.
I would say the Democrats were totally not culpable on this if they hadn’t tied the extension to their jobs bill for so long to try and get it and a bunch of pork barrel legislation through before stripping it from the bill on Monday to present it to the Senate on Tuesday evening along with the homebuyers credit. Waiting so long AND NEVER BRINGING THE BILL UP FOR DEBATE BEFORE VOTING was wrong on so many different levels. Also, for cripes sake, find at least 1/2 the freaking funding and reach across the aisle. People are losing their homes, phones, car and job potential as they move into a welfare state.
I definitely blame both sides for going on vacation 2 days early. I’m am so sorry you lost Senator Byrd. But it’s the job of his family to lay him to rest, not the federal government. It’s not the right of the federal government in a time of crises to add two extra days to their vacation.
YOu know, there is an amendment that says the people of the state can protest, on election ballot (yeah November), the salary of their state representatives. All it takes is a 2/3 vote of the people and these guys salaries have to be reviewed. Why don’t we just do that. Put them back on minimum wage, see how easy it is for them to live. Wait…that would just raise their contributions from major corporations whom they gave tax breaks to. Ok, how about they wear nascar stickers with their sponsers on them, that way I know exactly whom I should talk to to get things done. Because it sure as heck isn’t the senate, and the senate sure as heck isn’t working for the people anymore.
The republican’s weren’t worried about the deficit when that big insurance company and their friends the Wall Street execs were giving themselves bonuses with taxpayer money!!! Next election – let Congress feel the sting of the unemployment lines!!! No more raping and pillaging the middle class!!! – How many years have you paid taxes? 30? 40? Your government bails out bankers and Wall Street execs using your tax dollars – but unemployment is allowed to expire? What happened to “by the people” or “for the people”? Or are the big campaign contributors the only “people” who count to congress? They are playing games AGAIN FOR THE THIRD TIME while you are wondering how to feed your kids? Figure it out! Malfeasance – Failure of a public official to perform their duties!!! Next Election MAKE YOURSELF MATTER BY VOTING!!! 10% unemployment carries 10% of the vote! Use it!! Fire them all next election or recall every Congress member NOW for Malfeasance – Failure of a public official to perform their duties!!! Next Election – Lets get people elected who actually represent all the People- this current congress represents only special interest groups!
Don’t re-elect or even better Recall your senator or congressman that voted no to extended benefits.Failur of an elected official to do their job is malfeasance.

If one of these is your senators, and you live in the right state, start a recall or don’t re-elect!!!
smg, I totally agree. Obama should call them back. They had better vote for this bill immediately when they get back. There are so many people out of work, and with bleak job prospects, this is cucial that the extension bill be passed.
I lost my job of ten years due to the recession. My unemployment benefits have run out. I served six years in the military. I have worked and paid taxes all my life. Now that I need a helping hand from my country I am being told “NO”. If these lawmakers had to endure the next several months with no money to live on or to pay bills with they would have a very different viewpoint. What they are doing is shameful. Americans denying fellow Americans the very basic needs of life. They have the nerve to go on vacation and live the good life we will worry about losing our cars and our homes with no money for gas to look for work. The job market is still terrible. We need that extension, our lives depend on it. Somebody has got to do something or this is no longer the America we Vets fought for.
Wake up politians .Unemployment compensation is the best economic stimulas because it pays the mortgages and feeds the families during the greatest economic crises in american history.Lets face reality .At least another 2 years we have to bite the bullet and provide unemployment not for 13 weeks but 2 years.Priority has to be for the unemployed .Welfare recipients have 5 years to get their act together. How about 2 years for hardworking unemployed. Please do it now .i plead with you.If you treat us this way .They will cut off our seniors next!
The senaters in SC are just Stupid. I think they just vote NO on everything to just live thier lives on vacation and our tax dollars. Yes our tax dollars that are not being used for us but for them to live high on the hog and we have to suffer. This is not right. We need senaters who are for the people. Please vote on the unemployment extentions TODAY we have suffered long enough!!!!!!!!
I live in Illinois and my husband has worked steady since he was thirteen, hes now fortyfour, this is the first time he has ever been laid off, going on eight months.his unemployment stopped and he was told no-extension..we have nothing coming in,nothing left in the savings to live on,that means we will lose our home, car and no food to put on the table.cant pay the utilites, those will be shut off.yet our politicians are paid rediculous paychecks, expect us to vote them into office, yet they dont give a dang about the american people.they have billions to send overseas,to aid other coutries, to put cash in their own pockets, but as for the everyday hard working american they dont give a dang about us,only when they need us to fight their wars,to vote for them are we then wanted….
I was laid off after 15 yrs on my job so the length of service on my job should show what my work ethic is about. I’m not lazy an have only been receiving ui benefits for 6 months. Not only have my benefits been stopped my ex husband who pays me child support thru ui benefits has also been cut so I’m not getting support for my kids either! I’m appalled at how hard working citizens who are laid off by no fault of their own are being treated. I stand to loose it everything including my sanity if something doesn’t give. I guess the old saying that the rich gets richer really is true! I beg that someone listens so that the extension law gets passed today!
I just sent the last 21 years working at the same job. I got laid off because of the economy. This country has come to the aid of immigrants and and every natural disaster on the planet. Unfortunately there are Americans drowning in debt, losing their homes and having their families go with out. Good thing Haiti got 20 million after their disaster. My unemployment was shut off on the 26th and we will have to scramble to even make the next Mortgage payment. Well as long as all the fat cats had a nice vacation, foreigners got millions, and Immigrants are taken care of that’s all that matters. As for my wife and I, we will try and figure out how long before we get booted from our house. I have been paying taxes since I started working when I was 16….Thanks Congress!!
Okay!
Please look at the list of the senators who voted NO on the extension!!!! Do you see!!! what repeats itself over and over!!! of course REPUBLICANS.. they voted no …. this is incredible and we keep voting for them… We have to really considered who runs this country and we the people should choose that!!! vote November… So they do not enjoy next July 4th 2011 holiday… I am really upset I have worked for 25 years and never ever filed for unemployment benefits but was laid off … 8 months ago and unable to find a job I send about 40 resumes per week and nothing. I have 3 children and about to end up homeless… Thank you Congress (republicans) hope you enjoyed your 4th of July celebration… I sure did not …. and the unemployed American…. I can not wait for November…
The whole issue of unemployment compensation extensions not being passed yet is complex, to be sure. As one who is directly negatively affected by the lack of congressional action on this, (my benefits ended about a month ago), I believe that the only way that any real change can be made in the long run is for the people who are affected (the long-term unemployed)to demonstrate visibly so that we get the attention of the media. Once we get the media’s attention I believe that congress will act. In America today, our government does not have the people’s best interests at heart as is evidenced by their lack of action on this issue. Does anyone have ideas as to how we can demonstrate our frustration and despair so that we gain the power in numbers? Aside from what has been said about voting them out of office in November…maybe there is something we can do more immediately…maybe hold demonstrations across the country.

i have worked 26 years and i have four children, and three grand children, and i been unemployed for a year, i have almost lost everything i have worked for.i have went back to college to get a better job, but meanwhile i need help to paying my bills.i am tired of the goverment telling us things will get better,we spend so much money on the war where our children are dying, but yet back at home the jobless americans are losing everything, what happened to the american dream,we are giving more money to other countries for there dreams.i think it’s time for all american people to stand up for our dreams, and come november let your voice be herd,we are tired, and weary.
If the United States would stop sending all that money overseas and start cutting the pay checks of all the Politicians there would be enough money in the United States to take care of the citizens of the United States. I have worked ever since I was 16 and now I am 46. I have been unemployed for 13 months now and I am about to lose everything I have worked for. I am a Army Veteran that served in Desert Shield/Storm and I can’t get any assistance from the VA. Why are our troops still in Iraq. Look at the money the U.S. could save if they would bring the troops back home. If they would have brought our troops back after Desert Shield/Storm maybe 9-11 would not have happened. Look at the money they have spent on rebuilding Iraq, just to destroy it again, that is stupid and all the equipment we left there in 90/91. Look at the money they spent on Vietnam. Look at all the money that could be saved. Then they could extend unemployment
benefits to help the United States economy.
This message is to all the Senators. Did you have a nice vacation? while you were gone unemployed americans are scaping and crawling to stay alive. Did you eat well? I had to get my food from a food bank. Next month I won’t have money for gas to drive there. You and the rest of the Republicans are heartless bastards. How dare you make American beg for benefits that they paid into.I have realatives or friends in some of your states. Most are unemployed we will rally those Americans you turned your back on, along with family and friends and make sure you don’t win another election. Get use to the unemployed. We will make sure you are one of them
Listen, my 26 weeks just ran out and these people are freaking playing games with my life. They haven’t approved my federal extension and i am about to go out on the street !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Help me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Somebody please help me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have no where to go and i live in arizona!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’ll freaking die in this hot heat if i lose my small apartment. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For some reason, my CA benefits checks used to come in my maiden name. Since I got cut off, I am getting tons of credit card applications in the mail addressed to my maiden name. Do you think there is a connection? Do you think the credit card company lobbiests have anything to do with Congress not passing this bill and then going on vacation? Just sayin…
