Digital News Report – Santa Cruz overwhelmingly voted for Democrats helping stop Meg Whitman’s bid for governor and Carly Fiorina’s senate plans.
Jerry Brown received 69.36% of the Santa Cruz vote leaving Meg Whitman only 25.76%. Nearly all of the races were lopsided with nearly 70% of the voters choosing a democrat over Republican.
The race was much closer on a statewide basis. Statewide, Brown only received 53.6% of the vote against Whitman’s 41.3%.
Barbara Boxer walked away with 68.27% of the vote in Santa Cruz County. Carly Fiorina only received 25.63%. Statewide, the race was much closer. Boxer received only 52.0%, compared to 42.6% gained by Fiorina.
U.S. Congress Races
Democratic incumbent, Anna G. Eshoo, beat her challenger, Republican Dave Chapman, for the 14th Congressional District, 68.3% to 28.7%. Libertarian Paul Lazaga received three percent of the vote.
In the 17th district, Democrat Sam Farr received 66.4% of the vote beating out Republican Jeff Taylor, who received only 30.5%. Eric Petersen, the Green Party candidate, received 1.7% and Libertarian Mary V. Larkin received 1.4%.
State Assembly Races
Bill Monning (Dem) beat Linda “Ellie” Black (Rep) by a substantial margin in the 27th Assembly district and Luis Alejo (Dem) beat Robert Bernosky (Rep) for the 28th district seat.
Proposition 19
While the measure failed statewide, here in Santa Cruz the proposition that would legalize the procession of a small amount of marijuana passed by a large margin. Only 36.23% of the county residents voted against the measure while 63.77% voted in favor.
