Digital News Report– Sony announced the newly available Filmy application which will make it possible to play AVCHD video on a PlayStation 3 game console. The application is available from the Sony PlayStation Store with a free 15-minute trial and to unlock all of that Filmy has to offer will cost $5.
The AVCHD video format is what is currently Sony video cameras recording for high definition. This makes it easier to watch your home videos on your television.
Other features of the Sony Filmy application is a fast way to search for AVCHD videos. There is also a way to organize your home videos. You can decide if you want your videos to have thumbnails, display by the date, by the time, and even by GPS Earth View. The GPS option is for cameras that have GPS information capabilities and will tell you where you took the footage based on location.

There is also a Digest Play option that will work with the metadata that was recorded with the videos. For instance you could have used Face Detection or Smile Shutter. The video will be cued up based on these selections. There is also a Favorite stamp so you can easily find your favorite scene in a recording.
To download the Filmy app for the PlayStation 3, you can get it at the PlayStation Store found under the media category. Once it is on the game console it will be found under the Video icon in the XrossMediaBar (XMB).
