Digital News Report – Japan is still facing numerous earthquake aftershocks, with a new bout of activity of quakes with a magnitude of 6.0 today. There have been 15 earthquakes so far today with over 5.0 in magnitude. Out of these, there was one 6.0 and one 6.2 magnitude earthquake. In addition to this, Japanese officials have announced more evacuations of residents living near the nuclear plant that is in danger of meltdown.
The earthquake activity is all centered around the Eastern Honshu, Japan region in the ocean shoreline of the country. Tokyo, Japan is located 72 miles from the 6.2 earthquake that occurred today at 10:31:46 PM local time. The closest cities from this earthquak were 22 miles away and were South of Kofu, Honshu and Northwest of Numazu, Honshu.
The earthquake that caused widespread damage on March 11, 2011, has now been upgraded to a 9.0 magnitude, according to the US Geological Survey. There have been several hundred aftershocks over 5.0 magnitude from this earthquake.
In addition to the damage from the March 11 earthquake, Japan was severely crippled by devastating tsunami waves that have been reported to be as high as 30 feet tall. Families are still looking for relatives that are missing. There is food, water, and shelter problems.
The worst fears are with a nuclear power plant that has had several failures to the cooling systems. Three units have had partial meltdown. Radiation release have been a major concern, and hundreds of thousands of nearby residents have been evacuated for safety concerns. The Japanese officials have restricted airplane flights over the nuclear plant to prevent spreading of any radiation that has leaked.
The Japanese Officials have announced the following at the Tuesday, March 15 at 11:00am local time:
”Residents staying within a 20-kilometer radius from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station, Tokyo Electric Power Co.,Inc. (TEPCO) shall be evacuated.(continuation)
Residents staying in the area from 20-kilometre to 30-kilometer radius from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station, Tokyo Electric Power Co.,Inc. (TEPCO) shall stay inside the houses or buildings. (NEW).
Observe directions by the relevant authorities if such directions are given.”
