Digital News Report – PBS is airing “Japan’s Killer Quake” on stations around the country Wednesday and Thursday night (check local listings and see video below). The one-hour program will explore the March 11th 2011 earthquake in Japan which led to the tsunami.
The show will take viewers through the event “moment by moment”. Besides seeing the disaster through first-person accounts, the PBS program will ask and try to answer questions like:
Why did the 30 foot high sea wall fail to keep the tsunami out? (The shoreline sank three feet)
How can we protect ourselves from another catastrophe like this?
The show will also investigate the threat posed by the Fukushima nuclear power plants.
“In the wake of such human tragedy, NOVA seeks to investigate and understand the science in order to better predict and prepare for natural catastrophes of this kind,” said NOVA’s Senior Executive Producer Paula Apsell.
In other PBS news there are reports that the Church of Scientology may purchase KCET-TV, a Los Angeles PBS station that split off from the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). In December the broadcaster announced that they were separating themselves from PBS. The L.A. Times says confirmed that the two sides are talking and the deal could be worth $14 million.
