Digital News Report – The Reelz Channel has been running a marathon of “The Kennedys” Saturday and will show the conclusion on Sunday, April 10th (see trailer below).
Media Week says the station took a risk airing the miniseries. The station is seen in 60 million homes and receives no fees from cable or satellite providers. While the top-tier channels receive payments from the providers, Reelz is paid only by advertisers.
Stanley S. Hubbard, the head of Hubbard Broadcasting which owns Reelz, said he hasn’t seen a more “interesting” TV series in decades.
The show has had both negative and positive criticism. As a docudrama, there are bound to be some inaccuracies. After reading early scripts some historians have complained.
But the New York Post calls the Kennedys “One of the best, most riveting, historically accurate dramas”. Meanwhile the LA Times says Barry Pepper deserves an Emmy Award.
Katie Holmes played Jacqueline Kennedy and Greg Kinnear played John F. Kennedy. JFK’s father, Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr (Tom Wilkinson), played an important role in getting his son the Presidency.
