Digital News Report – The City Attorney for San Francisco has praised the decision of the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals which ruled against the key provisions in Arizona’s immigration law, SB 1070.
Matt Dorsey, the spokesperson for the City Attorney, tells Digital News Report that the ruling backs up last year’s decision that the law interferes with federal government’s authority to enforce national immigration laws.
Dennis Herrera, the City Attorney, calls the law draconian and unconstitutional. “”If Arizona’s law were ever enforced as written, it would victimize citizens and non-citizens alike, and hinder local law enforcement’s ability to truly protect public safety,” Herrera said.
The case was brought forward by the Obama Administration. San Francisco and 14 other cities and counties from six states filed a separate lawsuit. Dorsey says the law could result in “racial profiling and harassment of American citizens, legal immigrants, and foreign tourists”.
