Digital News Report – The 18th annual Aloha Outrigger Races will be on Sunday, August 21, 2011 at the Santa Cruz Wharf starting at 9 a.m. The City of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation has announced that sign-ups for the outrigger canoe races are now open.
They say you do not have to be a pro, because they offer training and people that know how to steer and paddle as well as the canoe itself during the race. All you need to do is assemble a four-person team for your canoe, which will compete on an easy race created especially for a beginner. The canoe race is part of the free Polynesian Festival that will be going on during the same day.
Signup forms are available at The City of Santa Cruz website. The cost to enter the four-person team is $100 if you enter before July 28, 2011. If you enter after July 28, the cost to enter your canoe team is $120. T-shirts for each of the four members will be given when they are registered for the race.
The registration forms can be taken to the Parks and Recreation Office located at 323 Church Street. Their hours are between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
