Governor Brown vetoes California State Budget Senate Bill 69

Digital News Report – Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. said he is sending Senate Bill 69 back to the California State Legislature, because it was not a balanced solution. In January 2011, Brown had introduced his plan to balance the state balance as well as to pay down the $35 billion debt California owes.

Brown said that the Senate Bill 69 would have continued to cause, “big deficits for years,” and would create new debt in the billions. Brown also pointed out the legislation had, “questionable maneuvers,” involving expensive borrowing and improbable savings outlined in the bill.

Brown suggested that the Republicans need to work with the Democrats in coming up with solutions to find a balanced budget. Brown wants to have California citizens to vote on a tax extension and other reforms, but this option has been hindered by the Republicans. Another disagreement with the Republicans and Democrats is whether to continue to offer tax breaks for out-of-state companies doing business in the state. Brown does not want to see further budget cuts to education and safety, but says that if this occurs the blame should go to the Republicans for obstructing votes for other options.
