Digital News Report – Do you remember the Smurfs? OK, maybe some of you remember the popular 1980’s children Saturday morning cartoon series. However, you might want to get out and participate in the Global Smurfs Day event being held at locations worldwide on June 25, 2011. If not, everyone can still get their dose of these adorable blue creatures with the upcoming release of ‘The Smurfs’ movie, which will be released in theaters on July 29, 2011.
To promote the upcoming film and to commemorate the Smurfs creators birthday, Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation are going to try to set a Guinness World Records® for the most people dressed up as a Smurf in locations worldwide during a 24-hour time period. That is why June 25, 2011 is Global Smurfs Day. A smurfs costume is a white Smurf hat, white pants and shoes, and a skin that is painted blue.
In order to set a new record, the event must have over 2,510 people dressed up as Smurfs to show up at specific locations in twelve cities around the world. The locations for Global Smurfs Day are: Brussels, Belgium (Peyo’s home country); Athens, Greece; Scheveningen (The Hague), Holland; Dublin, Ireland; Mexico City, Mexico; Panama City, Panama; Warsaw, Poland; Moscow, Russia; Johannesburg, South Africa; New York, USA; and London, UK. The creator of the Smurfs cartoon characters was Peyo who was born on June 25, 1928. Peyo is a nickname that Pierre Culliford adopted during his career as a cartoonist. The first Smurf was introduced in another one of his comic series ‘Johan and Peewit’ in 1958. The Smurfs eventually became a hit in the United States in 1981, when Hanna-Barbera created the Saturday morning animated series.
On July 29, 2011, ‘The Smurfs’ movie will be released in theaters nationwide. The film has 3D animated smurfs interacting in a real world. The evil Gargamel along with his cat, chase after the Smurfs trying to capture them. The Smurfs end up in New York City and have to find a way to get back home safely.
