The Bill Factory: Lots of paper, few results

Since I began in the Assembly in 2001, I have been struck by the scant attention we as a Legislature collectively pay to the really big issues that plague California and weigh us down everyday. Like the budget – the document that expresses most of our policy proposals that a majority of lawmakers don’t even see until we’re asked to vote on it. Like the lack of attention to our most challenging obstacles, such as our unacceptable high school dropout rate, increasingly aging infrastructure and our inability to retain business investment and create jobs in California.

Samsung LTE Dongle Is Now Available for TeliaSonera’s World First Commercial 4G Service

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the leading mobile phone and equipment provider, has announced the commercial availability of its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) dongle in Sweden and Norway. From today, TeliaSonera begins offering commercial Samsung LTE dongles (Model Name: GT-B3710) for customers in Stockholm, Sweden and in Oslo, Norway. The introduction of the commercial dongle follows the announcement in October about TeliaSonera’s selection of Samsung as its 4G device provider.

Atlanta AT&T Customers Get Boost in Coverage with Second Layer of Capacity

Surfing the Internet, keeping up with social networking apps, streaming video — these are just a few of the things you can do on an AT&T* wireless device today. It’s also the reason AT&T has substantially increased capacity on nearly 90 cell sites across the metro Atlanta area. The project involved the addition of a second layer of capacity, or “second carrier,” to the AT&T 3G network.

Canadian Government Revenues From Wind Farms More Than Offset Federal Financial Incentive, GE Study Estimates

OTTAWA, Canada, Jan. 14, 2010 – GE Energy Financial Services, a unit of GE (NYSE: GE), unveiled today a study estimating that renewing a Canadian federal financial incentive that has now allocated virtually all of its funding for wind energy projects would more than pay for itself through tax revenues from the projects’ income, vendors’ profits and individual workers’ wages. The study estimated that injecting an additional $1.5 billion CDN into Canada’s ecoENERGY for Renewable Power program could spawn 5.2 gigawatts of new wind projects and carry a net present value benefit to Canada’s governments of $287 million CDN.
